Who is God
Sin to avoid,
Promise to hold,
Action to take place ,
Be a strong warrior, Num. 4:3
Count all the men from thirty to fifty years of age who come to serve in the work at the tent of meeting.
The Kohathites were to serve everything related with the sanctuary of the Tent of Meeting.
Who is God
• God assigns each and every detailed duty for His servants who serve in His sanctuary.
• God expects those who are most strong in spirit to do the ministries relating to the Word and worship.
Among the Kohathites, all men from thirty to fifty years of age were supposed to come to serve in the work at the tent of meeting. Men from thirty to fifty years of age must be most mature and strong in spirit and body and mind. These people were assigned to carry the tent of meeting every time when the Israelites moved. It is said that the total weight of metal used for the tent of meeting was 10,655. Kg, It was very heavy, only strong men could move it. What is the tent of meeting? It was the place where God dwelt with His presence and met His people through the priests and the Word was exhibited and people worshipped God. The fact that only mature Kohathites were eligible to serve in the tent of meeting tells us the lesson that only mature believers should serve the ministries related with God’s presence, His word and worship. Apostle John divided all believers into three groups in his first letter such as children, fathers and young men. All men between the age of thirty and fifty will refer to young men according to John’s classification. John said in 1 John 2:14, “ I write to you, young men because you are strong, and the word of God lives in you, and you have overcome the evil one.” Young men, in other words, mature men in body, mind and spirit should display the following three characteristics according to John’s teaching: They should be strong. The word of God should dwell within them. They should overcome the evil one. Apostle John is saying that young men should be prepared as strong warriors armed with God’s word to overcome the devil.
The enemy hates any ministry related with God’s presence and His word. As a result, preachers, teachers or worshippers may be exposed more to spiritual warfare. Only mature and strong warriors armed with the Word and the Spirit will remain as winners defeating the enemy.
Apostle John exhorts young men that the word should live in them. In other words, only when we are fully equipped the Word, we can be a powerful warrior in God’s kingdom. God’s good soldier should be absolutely trained with the Word in terms of reading the Bible, meditating on it and declaring it with faith. I am one of church leaders who preach the Word, teaches it and leads the worship service in a front line. As a lead pastor, I should be the strongest and most mature in our church. Therefore I should be very diligent to equip myself with the Word so that the Word may live in me, and I live in Him. Never forget always to wear a full armor of God which is the Word.
Sin to avoid: Do not be lazy training myself with the Word.
Promise to hold: Warfare belongs to the Lord.
Action to take place : Be more watchful and united with the Lord through prayer and the Word.
Heavenly Father, I thank You for calling me to be a minster of your Word. I am your unworthy servant, yet You entrusted me the most precious ministry to preach your Word and lead your flock. Although my body gets older, may my spirit be renewed daily so that I can become stronger warrior in your Kingdom like those Kohathites men between the age of 30 and 50. Help me more equipped with your Word so that Your word may live in me. I love you and want to follow you in all I do. I desire your presence always. Make me stronger in my body, mind and spirit for the sake of your church, your people and your kingdom. Amen.
God with you in the journey in the wilderness
And they shall lay a covering of porpoise skin on it, and shall spread over it a cloth of pure blue, and shall insert its poles. (Num 4:6)
- After having counted the ‘total’ number of the Levites by their fathers from one month old and up, God now orders Moses and Aaron to take a census of the ‘ministry-ready’ Levites from 30 years to 50 years old, i.e. those who enter the service.
- This ‘ministry-ready’ census begins with the Kohathites (cf. it was the Gershonites that started off first in the previous ‘general’ survey from one month old and up); however, the duties of the Kohathites begin with a description of what Aaron and his sons should do first, i.e. the covering of the holy articles with their respective proper coverings, which would then be carried by the Kohathites.
Who is God?
- God is the God of authority and order: He sets the three different subgroups of Levites for different ministries and put them under the oversight of Moses and Aaron.
- God is the God of honor: He ensures that the holy articles for “meetings” with Him are viewed, treated and carried with honor and dignity.
The tabernacle and the articles inside could be most fully accessed when the sons of Israel settled. Only then did they camp and tend the tabernacle and worship the Lord “properly.” However, they also had to move because they had a destination, the promised land.
When they moved, things must have been more hectic and challenging—even more so because of the rugged and uncontrollable nature of the wilderness. However, God ensures that the holy articles are carried with honor and dignity.
First, all the articles had to be covered with a covering of porpoise, strong leather, required for the tough journey which lays bare our weaknesses AND our utter need for His protection. Yes, humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time, casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you. The toughness of the journey will reveal our weakness but God will surely protect us, as long as you can humble yourselves before Him.
Second, every article from inside the tent of meeting had to be covered by a covering of blue cloth inside the porpoise. As Moses just saw up at Mt. Sinai, under His feet there is a pavement of sapphire, “as clear as the sky itself.” (Ex 24:10) As the hymnal goes, “Broader far is Jesus' ample breast than is heaven, from East to west.” Yes, we face the battle, and the challenges of life may attack your mind, but our God is always holy, the same yesterday, today and forever, and you should be transformed always by the renewing of your mind. Why? How? Because His will is always good and acceptable and perfect (Rom 12:2)! Especially, unlike all other items, the Ark of the Covenant has the cloth of “pure blue” as its outermost covering. No matter how tough the world may feel, the covenantal faithfulness of our God will always outshine it. His Presence and His Glory will surely never continue to overcome for the Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it or comprehend it (Jn 1:5) and for surely He has overcome the world (Jn 16:33)!
Third, the table of the bread of the Presence is additionally covered by a cloth of scarlet material. What makes you eat the Word of God is only through the blood of Jesus and you shall always be cleansed. “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” Especially, the altar of bronze is covered by a cloth of purple material. Purple being the royal color, it signifies that there is authority and power in what Jesus has done for us as He became the living sacrifice for us. Depending on the power of His kingly sacrifice that turned us around and made us into royal priesthood, repent and boldly approach Him.
Fourth, when you travel, you should not forget the wilderness—the packing and moving part—is not your destiny but you are headed for a destination. As Abraham was looking for the city which has foundations, whose architect and builder is God (Heb 11:10), God was not ashamed to be called his God for He has prepared a city for him (Heb 11:16). You should not forget you are a sojourner on earth. Yes even on this earth, there will be a time of refreshing. But eventually, there is an everlasting city, the promised land, for us. Let us proceed, fixing our eyes on Jesus, who has entered into the city as the King of glory for all of His people.
In sum, the journey in the wilderness may be tough, but let us not forget that this journey itself is not the goal but it’s only a way to get to the times of refreshing and our everlasting city. Through the passage the Lord graciously reminds us that He protects us and He is always holy. And we should be transformed by the renewing of our mind to know the good, pleasing and perfect will of God always. Also, we should be cleansed by the blood of Jesus and as we repent what the King of kings has achieved for us once and for all at the cross will powerfully cleanse us.
Lord, help me always look to You and shine Your light on me. Lord, help me carry Your Presence and Promise wherever I am and wherever I go. In Jesus Christ’s Name, I pray. Amen
