Blessings to serve in the House of God in His Way
"Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to dwell together in unity!" (Psalm 133:1)
- The summary account of the census of the three families of Levi who are 30 to 50 and are to enter the service for work in the tent of meeting, among Kohathites, Gershonites and Merarites
Who is God?
- God’s blessing is for those who serve in His House in His ways.
The general census of Levites was by seniority, and thus in the order of Gershon, Kohath and Merari. Yet, as to the ministry census, the arrangement is by priority and thus in the order of Kohath, Gershon and Merari. Rightly so. The Kohathites served and carried the holy articles (together with Eleazar the priest). The Gershonites and Merarites served and carried hangings and boards, respectively (together with Ithamar the priest).
I am led to get struck by how this order richly implies the blessing in serving in His House in His ways.
The Number One joy and blessing of serving in His House is to serve Him, behold Him, wait upon Him and hear His whisper—like those Kohathites and Eleazar who were granted access to His holy place. Simply, it is to know Him, to love Him, and to know that He loves you. What did Paul say? “More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ.” (Phil 3:8) Paul was “madly” in love with Christ because he was led to know that Christ was madly in love with him. To keep this love, however, you must fight the noblest fight, the worthiest fight ever! As a contemporary song confesses, “the joy of loving You, my Lord, never let anything take it away from me. Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, I love you Jesus my Lord.” And this morning, I was reminded of an old song composed by Bach, “Jesus meine Freude” and I keep listening to it on repeat. The German title means, “Jesus, my joy.” (It may phonetically sound more like “Jesus my Friend,” but more importantly HE IS. He is my friend and He is my joy.) Come and taste and know that He is good. The first blessing to serve in His House in His way is to know Him and to love Him.
Then, the joy of covering exemplified by coverings, tents, veils and screens, the items to be tended and carried by Gershonites. Over the past few days, the Lord has pounded on my heart and spirit through verses related to this from Proverbs. “He who conceals a transgression seeks love, but he who repeats a matter separates intimate friends. (Prov 17:9)” “The beginning of strife is like letting out water, so abandon the quarrel before it breaks out (Prov 17:14).” “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity (Prov 17:11)” “A man’s discretion makes him slow to anger, and it is his glory to overlook a transgression (Prov 19:11).” And of course, “Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all sins (Prov 10:12).” Ham mocked Noah’s nakedness but Shem and Japheth took a garment and covered it! We are who we are and I am who I am because Jesus covered a multitude of my sins. The second blessing, therefore, to serve in His House in His way is to cover a multitude of sins and grow in humility, knowing that God is always interested in testing and purifying your hearts in the midst of it all. “The refining pot is for silver and the furnace for god, but the LORD tests hearts. (Prov 17:3)” Amen
The last but not least joy of serving in His House in His way shall be to serve one another and fervently love one another—like those boards, pillars, bars, pegs and cords that the Merarites tended and carried, the items that were meant to raise and build up the whole structure and yet needed each other to stand themselves. Peter said, “Above all, keep fervent in your love for one another (indeed because love covers a multitude of sins!) (1 Peter 4:8).” I’m here so humbled about how little I can do, but I see there are so many who are helping, loving, sacrificing. In our human eyes, they are all imperfect men and women, but they are God’s vessels. As we love one another fervently, we shall indeed build up one another and we shall indeed see the miracles of God. The third blessing, which also cannot be taken away, in serving in His House in His way is to love each other fervently.
Lord, thank You for having me in Your House. Lord, help me serve in Your House in Your way always. Lord, show Your miracles. In Jesus Christ’s Name, I pray. Amen
“Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brother to dwell together in unity!
It is like the precious oil upon the head, coming down upon the beard, even Aaron’s beard, coming down upon the edge of his robes.
It is like the dew of Hermon, coming down upon the mountains of Zion.
For there the Lord commanded the blessing—life forevermore.” (Psalm 133:1-3) AMEN
Who is God
Sin to avoid,
Promise to hold,
Action to take place,
