OBSERVATION

Summary

Who is God

APPLICATION

Sin to avoid,
Promise to hold,
Action to take place,

Num 7:1-11
"First Things First" (to be dedicated to Him)

SCRIPTURE

"Accept these things from them, that they may be used in the service of the tent of meeting, and you shall give them to the Levites, to each man according to his service. (Num 7:5)"

OBSERVATION

Summary
- After Moses sets up the tabernacle, anoints it and consecrates it together with all its furnishings, the altar and all the utensils, the leaders of Israel bring offerings (6 carts & 12 oxen), which are to be given to Gershonites (2 carts & 4 oxen) and Merarites (4 carts & 8 oxen), respectively. Then, they are to present their “dedication” offerings for each tribe.

Who is God?
- He is the God of order:
    - Sanctification first, dedication after: When the sanctuary gets ready, He lets the leaders of the tribes dedicate themselves. Likewise, when our sanctuary is ready, He leads us to true dedication.
    - He wills to quicken us to know we are together: Before they dedicated their tribes, the leaders were called to sacrificially and collectively support the “mission of God” together.

APPLICATION

The passage describes what happens before the leaders of the twelve tribes dedicate themselves to the Lord. First of all, and uniquely, the Scripture revisits the fact that it shall happen on the same day when Moses had finished setting up the tabernacle, anointed it and consecrated it (together with all the furnishings, utensils and altar).

Indeed, true dedication is possible only because we have been called and made into the temple of the living God where His Spirit dwells (Rom 8:9, 1 Cor 3:16, 1 Cor 6:19) Hallelujah! However, because this tremendous treasure is still in the earthen vessel, our outer man, we are prone to err and sin. Thus, I shall repent before this gracious truth that even though I am only earthen, both fragile and hard the precious Holy Spirit lives on the inside of me. Have you fallen short? Have you erred again? Repent and recommit yourself to being the temple of God.

Still on the same day and yet before the dedication gets to commence with the tribe of Judah, there is yet another thing that is supposed to happen. All twelve tribes have to prepare something together for the mission of God, which is absolutely necessary to facilitate the journey and movement of the people of God and His glory in their midst. They have to prepare 6 carts and 12 oxen together, which will be eventually used by Gershonites (2 carts & 4 oxen) & Merarites (4 carts & 8 oxen), respectively. The notable thing is that at least based on the Scripture the carts and the oxen don’t get distributed with any tags of particular origin or destination. In other words, once they are offered from all tribes, they get “blended" together and communally distributed to the levitical group. Furthermore, each cart has be offered by 2 tribes together.

It will be--and it gets--SOO chaotic and painful if somebody thinks that they are dedicating themselves to God while they took no time to see themselves as part of the community. In fact, it is no help to building a community of God at all. I am here with my family, and I am humbly and painstakingly learning that it takes a whole family to love and grow, just like somebody mentioned a long while ago that it takes a village to raise a kid. I am becoming painfully aware of how much Dad has served and worked to support Mom. Yes, we are family and so we didn’t want to single it out as some kind of “additional work.” But I realize that what Dad has done and is doing must be acknowledged and thanked for. I am convicted to be changed, so in a self-quarantine, when I call the parents, instead of bypassing Dad and calling Mom, I am reminding myself to call him first and connect with him first and talk to Mom. Likewise, I have a younger brother. While he always lived and traveled across Asia and I live across the Pacific and the US continent, quite some time had passed with no or little “quality” time spent between the two of us talking and sharing with each other. But I need him and I am grateful that he tries. When we love and pray together for our Mom and Dad, we wouldn’t need any tags of origin (between us) and destinations (between our parents), because we are one together.

I think this realization should and does apply to our church ministry. Every servant is different and perhaps no one is perfect, but we are called to be together and serve together. A tough world and a tough situation so easily makes us both vulnerable and hardened that I have to admit over and over again that I am so prone to err and sin. But there is always a chance if you can repent and know that we are together and we are stronger together.

First things first. To be dedicated to God, let me always repent as His temple, giving His Spirit thanks and adoration. Also, to be dedicated to God, let me be humbled and remember that we are called to be together and are stronger together.

PRAYER

Father, thank You for humbling me once again with the painful yet much necessary realization that I am weak alone but I can always repent because of Your grace and also we are called to be together and we are stronger together. Father, help me not forget this lesson always and live it more deeply and genuinely. In Jesus Christ’s Name, I pray. Amen

1. Scripture: Numbers 7:2
“Then the leaders of Israel, the heads of families who were the tribal leaders in charge of those who were counted, made offerings.”

2. Observation:
* Summary: When Moses was finished with setting up the tabernacle, the leasers of Israel entered into the tabernacle and brought gifts with them.
* Who is God?
God accepts our gifts.
God is pleased by our offering.

3. Application:
In response to the Aaronic benediction (6:24–26) which is God’s promise to bless His people, the leaders of 12 tribes brought offerings to God. Then the Lord accepts them gladly and instructed Moses to give them to the Levites.
Yes, our relationship with God is not just one-way. God is not just the object of searching and crying out for only when we are in need of help.
On the other hand, God is not the only God who commands and reigns over us. He is also our Father, our bridegroom, and our friend.  God is a God who wants to have a relationship with us and wants to love us.
A loving relationship is never a one-way street. Our right response to the gracious Lord is to offer thanksgiving and worship; Be thankful for the priceless grace and share the blessings God has given me with our neighbors.
Then God will gladly accept our offering and he will give it back to us at the interest rate of Heaven, multiplying thirty, sixty, or even a hundred times.

4 Prayer
Father, thank you for your priceless grace and everything you have done for me. Holy Spirit, please help me so that offer thanksgiving and worship in all circumstances!
