Who is God
Sin to avoid,
Promise to hold,
Action to take place,
The Redeemed Eldest Son
On the fourth day it was Elizur the son of Shedeur, leader of the sons of Reuben. (Num 7:30)
- The leaders of Zebulun and Reuben bring offerings to the tabernacle on the 3rd and 4th days, respectively.
Who is God?
- Jesus became a ransom for many. He calls and redeems all men in Jesus as the children of God.
Reuben had a tumultuous past and even lost his firstborn right. What a sad fall for this eldest son of Jacob.. However, in this passage, his tribe doesn’t get left out but gets called to the tent of meeting, according to the “new order”.
True to all men, of course, but at least I grew up at least being mindful of some “stereotypes” about the eldest sons. ‘They often get pampered and start off as their parents’ most favored kid. Yet, without the backing of true maturity, they might fall short sometime later, etc. etc.’ In fact, the Bible as well as the people around me seem to offer quite a few examples where the first didn’t seem to grow mature enough and eventually buckled or showed some real rough edges under the weight of many trials.
People might conveniently go tut tut over them but it should be a very painful story for them. Many complexes, hidden or not, denied or accepted, might be there to entrap men especially the eldest sons. A crucial mismatch and struggle between what you say you are and how you really feel that you are. However, God tells us a different story and God shows the one way out to that different story!! It is to have Jesus as your true eldest brother. In our true brother, they can be redeemed. And whoever believes shall get redeemed!!!
In today’s passage, Reuben lines up and waits. On Day 1 Judah offered, followed by Issachar and Zebulun on the next 2 days. Now it’s his turn. He could allow seeing his three younger brothers go before him and seeing himself on the entry number 4 to embitter him or make him jealousy, especially as he sees Judah take leadership over all the sons officially. Or, he could still gratefully choose to join the worship where Judah was chosen by God to take the lead (better yet, in our case it is Jesus!!!!) and see himself redeemed graciously. Maybe in the Old Testament, Reuben might still have had some difficult feelings to overcome to accept this ‘new order.’ But not so in the New Age brought on by Jesus.
Today, I fell so many times and all those missteps feel so embarrassing. And I see myself no or little different from the first son of Jacob. But as I pondered over this passage, strength arose, praise the Lord, to see a clear choice between to despair over my Reubenness and to see Jesus calling me to come to His family and become renewed as His son. By His grace, the more the pain, the more obvious the choice I must make and the stronger the gratitude became! Hey, John! What does the Bible say and show? God called Reuben to come and worship. God has called you to come and worship Him and be renewed as His child under the kingship of Jesus.
What then? Repent! Rejoice! Recommit!! You may have looked and felt a fine eldest son, but even when some of the hidden complexes hit you rudely wake up your old you, you can—and thus you shall—find peace and restoration in your True Eldest Brother Jesus.
- Sin to avoid: Don’t live as a ‘title-heavy’ yet ‘heavily wounded’ eldest son but know that Jesus has called you and is always there with you. Come to Him and be renewed and live as a redeemed son of God.
- Promise to hold: He forgives you and restores you when you truly repent.
- Action to take: Renounce all the sins with your heart, your words and your actions. Trust and rejoice in His forgiveness. Declare victory and obedience in the Name of Jesus.
Father, I am so sorry that I was like Reuben. Father, I thank You that still in You there is forgiveness!!! Lord, You are the Redeemer for all and for me. Lord, redeem me and use me for Your glory. In Jesus Christ’s Name, I pray. Amen.
