OBSERVATION

Summary

Who is God

APPLICATION

Sin to avoid,
Promise to hold,
Action to take place,

Num 18:8-14
Do Not Worry

SCRIPTURE

Now behold, I Myself have given you charge of My offerings, even all the holy gifts of the sons of Israel I have given them to you as a portion and to your sons as apertural allotment. (Num 18:8)

OBSERVATION

Summary
- God says that the gifts Israelites bring to God shall be gifts for Aaron and his sons.

Who is God?
- He provides for those who serve Him with: 1) helpers, 2) mission & position, and 3) "bread"

APPLICATION

After God declared 2 gifts for priests—Levites as their helpers and priesthood as their mission—in yesterday’s passage, He pronounces the third set of gifts. They are the offerings that Israelites bring to God, but God says that He set them as a portion for them, a perpetual allotment for their sons, to be holy, for them to eat, and to be theirs.

Last evening, when I went home from the hospital, I found two boxes were delivered there. They were all gifts: one was a box of potatoes from my father-side aunt living in Kangwondo, and the other was a box of apples from my mother-side aunt living in Eumsong. Though it was a long day and everybody must have been tired, I felt grateful and refreshed. By faith, I felt that God was graciously giving me some message. I didn’t rush but I wanted to keep it in my spirit about the meaning of these two gifts which were delivered by two different relatives but on the same day with no prior coordination.

Then, on this morning, it suddenly dawned on me. “Ah, God talked about two gifts from yesterday’s portion.” Then, it felt that God was giving me affirmation about yesterday’s conviction that indeed He has given me and will give me 2 gifts—sanctuary and priesthood. Rather than trying to be too specific, I just felt that God was giving me some encouragement. Then, I took the liberty of thinking about them just a little further. God talked about the sanctuary and then the priesthood. The first gift delivered home—actually for my parents—was potatoes and the second was apples. It may just be my sheer and wildest imagination but, just maybe, serving in His sanctuary could be felt as a thankless task like potatoes hidden underground much of the time of growth. But, as you serve the Lord, He will bring you delicious—and may I also say, beautiful?—fruits onto your priesthood.

Then, I’ve opened the Bible for today’s portion, honestly to some “disappointment.” (I was most likely longing for some wonderful, divine promise for my mother’s healing…I am Sorry Lord…) As it turns out, the passage was talking about another set of gifts for Aaron and his sons. This time, it was about the offerings that the Israelites bring to the Lord, which He is giving them as gifts. Then, especially after the two boxes delivered home yesterday, how should I read the passage and more importantly and yet most humbly “interpret His message”?

The passage says He will provide for His servants. Isn’t He then telling me an affirmation once again about His provision? That said, the passage makes it powerfully clear that this provision is an outcome of encounters between the Holy God and His holy servants. “[They] shall be most holy for you and for your sons.” You must sanctify yourself before and onto the Holy Lord. Like yesterday’s takeaway, you shall not shrink back but devote your life as His servant and slave. Then, out of that encounter, out of that relationship, God promises He will provide.

Ah, my faith is small. But I should trust His Word. He who promised helpers, He who promised mission also promises provisions. Quite shamefully, I acknowledge whenever I come to Korea, my financial insufficiency feels more painful and groundless envy for the haves tends to get overblown. But what does the Lord say? “Do not be worried about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on… Do not worry then, saying, ‘what will we eat?’ Or ‘what ill we drink?’ Or ‘what will we wear for clothing?’ The equivalent questions of 21st century might be: what kind of savings, what car, what job, what salary, etc.. But Jesus PROMISED: But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. Yes, I have to live diligently. But I should also remember it is a greater blessing to give than to receive, even though my faith is small. First and foremost, I shouldn’t worry but be holy onto Him. He has promised He will provide.

PRAYER

Father, have mercy on my lack of faith. But help me NOT worry BUT trust you and be holy onto my Holy God. Father, help me always boldly renounce the lust of the flesh, the lust of the In Jesus Christ’s Name, I pray. Amen
