OBSERVATION

Summary

Who is God

 APPLICATION

Sin to avoid,
Promise to hold,
Action to take place,

Leave  in God's hands, Josh.  9:25.

We are now in your hands. Do to us whatever seems good and right to you.

Observation

Summary
The Gibeonites explain to Joshua why they deceived him and leave them in his  hands. Joshua orders the Gibeonites to be the men who cut down trees and water in the house of God.

Who is God?
God takes care of those who put themselves in God's hands to the end.

 Applications

The Gibeonites confessed all their lies and leave their destiny in Joshua's hands. Joshua proclaimed that they should serve in the house of God as woodcutters and water carriers. The Gibeonites put their fate in the hands of God. Since then, God has faithfully taken care of the Gibeonites, and I have researched their history in the Bible out of curiosity.

Later at the Battle of Gibeon, Joshua and Israel saved Gibeon's enemies by keeping their peace treaty.  Later when king  Saul destroyed them, God punished Israel for breaking its covenant with Gibeon through  the famine of three years in David's time. The Gibeonites continued to serve in the temples slaves in the era of David and Solomon. When they returned from Babylonian captivity, under the name of Nebinim they participated in temple rebuilding project.

It was the Nedinim who found the Levites scattered during the Babylonia captivity and brought them back  to the temple service. They made a vow not to marry gentiles in Nehemiah’s time.

The Gibeonites were the people of faith who heard the fame of Jehovah God and put their fate in Joshua's hands. They believed in Jehovah God just by rumors, but their faith was sincere and lasting. . They were satisfied as slaves in the temple and kept their duties for generations, and God took care of them to the end. God takes care of those who left them in His  hands faithfully so that they may live for His glory. I leave all things big and small in the hands of God with faith like the Gibeonites.

Sin to avoid, I repent of the unbelief that I fail to trust God and leave in His hands completely.
Promise to hold, God will take care of those who are entrusted to Him faithfully till the end.
Action to Take place, I leave our church saints in the hands of God, who are now ill. I leave our church  construction plan  in God's hands, and tomorrow's Sunday service in God's hands. I leave my visit to Korea in God's hands.

Heavenly Father, I leave the rest of my life and my ministry for you in your hands again today. May the Lord be with me until the day I meet you face to face. Lead me to live for your glory till the end. I leave my daughter and our church  saints in your hands. Lead ICC to  save a million souls. Amen

Josh 9:20-27
Take Serving the Lord Seriously

SCRIPTURE

But Joshua made them that day hewers of wood and dryers of water for the congregation and for the altar of the LORD, to this day, in the place which He would choose. (Josh 9:27)

OBSERVATION

Summary
- The passage captures a dynamic of conversations among Gibeonites, the leaders of Israel and Joshua regarding how the Gibeonites are commanded to become hewers of wood and drawers of water for the congregation and for the altar of the Lord—in return for being allowed to live among the sons of Israel,.

Who is God?
- Sometimes, He redeems people in very mysterious ways.

APPLICATION

Gibeonites were “destined” to be destroyed. But by their cunning, they survive. Yet, they get reduced to a perpetual “drudgery" of hewing wood and drawing water for Israel. I get to think of two lessons.

First, I should not take lightly the privilege of serving the Lord! Bluntly put, they say—rightly—you have access to the holy of holies in Christ and furthermore you even have holy ministry onto the Holy God!! Compare that with serving only with hewing wood and drawing water, even metaphorically. You shall serve the Lord where you are called with fear and trembling. True, it is not a spirit of fear but of power and love and discipline that God gives us. Praise the Lord! Equally true, however, I should continue to humble myself and serve the Lord with fear and trembling. Don’t ever take your ministry for granted.

Second, though it was perhaps a “drudgery” by all accounts, God had a mysterious way to encounter them and bless them, i.e. the Gibeonites, the unlikely people of God. They were to hew wood and draw water for the congregation of Israel and for yet “the altar of the LORD” as well. Though not from a glorious position or status, they were still called to serve the altar of the Lord. Perhaps, it is NO COINCIDENCE that the Scripture records that in (or, well into) David’s time, the tabernacle of the Lord rested at Gibeon and an altar of burnt offering as well! In other words, it seemed to start with a second-class status and meager duties and yet somehow they ended up inviting the tabernacle and the altar to be located at their place! Furthermore, the Scripture testifies that some of their descendants stand strong and firm in the return of Israel and the restoration of Jerusalem (Neh 3:7, 8, 7:25).

What then? Whatever has been entrusted to you for His Kingdom, don’t take it lightly or for granted. Serve the Lord with fear and trembling, where you are. Especially even when the pressure mounts to look at it as downgraded or low, resist the pressure but focus on the joy of serving the Lord where you are. The Scripture proves God had a mysterious way of redeeming unlikely people in unlikely ways. And He still does! “You were at that time separate from Christ, excluded from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus you who formerly were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For He Himself is our peace, who made both groups into one and broke down the barrier of the diving wall.” (Eph 2:12-14)

- Sin to avoid: pride or hubris that undervalues the ministry the Lord granted to you. Fight it, hate it, fear it, and repent it!
- Promise to hold: While I was a far off, separate from Christ, excluded from the commonwealth of Israel, but I have been brought near by the blood of Christ!!”
- Action to take: Serve the Lord where you are with fear, trembling and gratitude.

PRAYER

Lord, help me be humble and grateful and serve You and Your people with fear and trembling. In Jesus Christ’s Name, I pray. Amen
