Who is God
Sin to avoid,
Promise to hold,
Action to take place,
Rely only on the Lord. Josh. 11:6
Then the Lord said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid of them. By this time tomorrow I will hand all of them over to Israel as dead men. Then you must cripple their horses and burn their chariots.”
Jabin king of Hazor formed a huge Canaanite united army and invaded Israel. But God handed them over to Israel. He commanded Joshua to cut off the tendons of horses of the enemy and to burn chariots when they got victory, and Joshua and the people of Israel obeyed.
Who is God
• God is strong in warfare. If we trust wholeheartedly, he will give victory in any difficult situation.
• God wants His children to rely solely on Him.
The story of the victory of the Canaan conquest continues to unfold. God gave Israel an amazing victory again this time. Like the sand on the beach, many people attacked Israel, but God handed them over to Israel. In the course of the victory, God commanded Joshua and Israel to break the tendons of hind legs and was to burn all chariots Israel won as spoils of war. In any war, the number of horses and chariots may mean the symbol of military power. Having defeated the great army, Israel must have plundered a huge number of horse and chariots. But God ordered Joshua to throw them all away. God wanted Israel to rely on Him only. He could not allow Israel to distract their hearts from God to the visible power of this world. Joshua must have been really hard to obey that command, for Israel has to continue the war until overcoming the entire Canaanites. But Joshua and the people of Israel obeyed God's command. God tested Israel and Israel passed the test by obedience.
Thus God sometimes tests us to see if we really trust Him or not. Do I rely only on God wholeheartedly? Or sometimes do I rely on man or other worldly things such as material, connection, intelligence or human power? As a pastor, I always need help of man in ministry. Therefore, I have a tendency to rely on people more than God sometimes. But it is the church of God. If I trust God alone wholeheartedly, He will lead His church. Never rely on any visible things in any case. Make every effort to please God and obey all things. Total obedience is the key to victory.
Sin to avoid, I repent my tendency to rely on people more than God.
Promise to hold, God can give victory under any circumstances.
Action to take place, rely wholeheartedly on God. Never rely on human beings or visible objects.
God the Father, I repent that I have a tendency to rely on man. I admit that I am often hurt and disappointed in my heart because I rely on people. I will rely on the LORD wholeheartedly as if I decide to cut off the tendons of horse and burn chariots. Amen
Submit to God
Then the LORD said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid because of them, for tomorrow at this time I will deliver all of them slain before Israel; you shall hamstring their horses and burn their chariots with fire.” (Joshua 11:6)
- God gives Joshua a strategy and victory over the allied forces of Jabin of Hazor and others in the north.
Who is God?
- God who gave you success yesterday (in the south) can also give you success today (in the north).
- God works with both His power and wisdom to bring victory to His people for His glory.
God who gave victory to Joshua can give him victory continuously. “The Lord’s hand is not so short that it cannot save; nor is His ear so dull that it cannot hear.” If and when you fully submit to His will, He will not be bound or hindered by anything or anyone to give you victory.
In today’s passage, God is shown once again to give Joshua a specific strategy as in the battles over Jericho and Ai. It was to hamstring their horses and burn their chariots with fire. From a practical standpoint, it was perhaps very crucial because the northern armies had high dependence on cavalry. But I must confess that at the end of the day it was not so much a practicality of this piece of wisdom as its source (that it came from God) that mattered!
What’s your moral? First, may you truly know you died to yourself at the Cross and also may you die to yourself today and everyday and always. But may it never be that I would boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. (Gal 6:14) Second, may you never let the Word of God depart from your mouth, but meditate on it day and night so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. Then, God promised and fulfilled: “you will make your way prosperous and you will have success.” Here, “prosperous” comes from salah (breakthrough), and “success” from sakal (insight, prudence)” Indeed, Christ crucified shall always be the power of God and the wisdom of God. Submit to Him and drawn near His Word and obey!
- Sin to avoid: Make no compromise with sin, your pride.
- Promise to hold: Christ crucified is the power of God and the wisdom of God.
- Action to take: Cry out that you die to yourself on the Cross today and always and draw near His Word with all your heart, soul, strength and mind and obey the Word.
Lord, help me boast never except in Your Cross. Lord, help me know and completely submit to what You have done: Your Cross where the world has been crucified to me and I to the world. Lord, help me draw near Your Word with all my heart, soul, strength and mind.
